Keepee's were the best hamburgers, by far, anywhere in Michigan, when I was a kid. They had an original resturant in downtown Flint. Burgers, fries and (my favorite) Vanilla Cream Ales (Vernors Ginger Ale, with flavoring and cream in it). Years later, they were 'bought out' by Bill Thomas' Halo Burgers, which, of course, expanded throughout the metro Flint area. The burgers then were still good, but just not the same. Anyone in Flint also should remember the building next door to the original Kewpee's. They had a large murial painted on it with the famous Vernor's Gnomes rolling barrels of ginger ale on it.
Anyway, years later I found a Kewpee's in Sylvania, Ohio. Needless to say, I probably spent $20 in food, just to trip down memory lane. Since then, that Kewpee closed down and Lima, Ohio is the last known area with them. Funny thing is, all of these reviews compare the Kewpee burger to Wendy's. The way I see it, Dave Thomas basically 'stole' the idea for Wendy's from Kewpee's. Even down to the frosty. Now, back in the day, Kewpee's frosty's had like specks or flecks of chocolate in the ice cream, unlike the chocolate ready mix liquids that Wendy's uses today.
Last time I was at the Sylvainia Kewpee, they had iron-ons for t-shirts with their little Kewpee Doll insignia, with their motto under it, which read: "Kewpee with a pickle on top, make your heart go flipity flop."
Let's just hope that these last Kewpee's don't go the same way that Burger Chef or Red Barns did. |

In the '70s and '80s, (before cell phones were the norm) if we couldn't locate our father around lunchtime to get business messages to him, we called the Kewpees. He was usually at one of them, and quite often, having a business lunch with a client.
We also had exchange students from all over the world.. all of whom have returned for visits after their year long stay, and they all want to go to the Kewpee first!
Can't believe nobody talked about the downtown Kewpee's unique turntable that used to turn the cars around in the lot to get back out. Sadly, the hydraulics went bad and they stopped using it some time ago. Its still there, just buried under all the asphalt.
I never tried green olives on a burger before the kewpee.. now I wouldn't have them any other way!
The seasonal Februcherry and Marchocolate Pies are fab, and at Christmas, their Mincemeat is TERRIFIC.
I now live an hour away, and still crave kewpees when I come to town! |

I moved away from Lima. I drive almost 2 hrs about 3 times a month just to eat there. I love it!! And I think the reason it's somewhat like Wendy's is because Dave Thomas used to work at the Kewpee. |

Fresh burgers on fresh buns...thick-cut fries...hot chili...delicious pies...thick malts.
When visiting family members in Lima, I definitely have to make a stop (or two, or three...) at the Kewpee. Incredible food. Incredible service. |
