Blimpyburger is the kind of place that can change the way you look at hamburgers.
Blimpyburger (formerly "Krazy Jim's Blimpyburger") is a local shrine to what a hamburger can be. As you walk along the service counter, you choose the number of patties, (three is a decent minimum), the roll (from five or six varieties), any of four or five types of cheese, and a variety of grilled or fresh toppings, including mushrooms (grilled or raw), onions (raw or grilled), even a fried egg. The cold toppings are what you'd expect in just about any other burger joint (lettuce, relish, ketchup, etc.) but you have a choice of mustards and you can get peppers and olives.
The deep fryer offers such standard fare as steak fries and onion rings, but the batter on the onion rings is of the light, crisp, falling-off-the-onion variety and very tasty. You can also get less typical burger joint fare such as fried zucchini and (my favorite) fried mushrooms, in the same seasoned batter.
A Blimpyburger is a real handful, and completely unlike anything a fast food chain can hope to offer. The beef is ground fresh daily on site, and smashed flat into thin, delectable patties when you place your order. If you're counting calories or overly worried about your cholesterol, you should probably give Blimpyburger a miss-- Ann Arbor vegetarian standard Seva is a few blocks up the street and half a block west. While Blimpyburger has veggie burgers available, it strikes me as missing the point of eating there.
Part of the experience at Blimpyburger is the staff. If you don't know what you're doing while you're ordering, they'll vigorously prompt you in order to keep things moving. If they come across to you as rude, then you probably aren't "getting" the Blimpyburger experience. "Gruff" is typical; "Rude" isn't.
The dining area is small, seating maybe 16-20 comfortably, and can get quite crowded at mealtimes, especially when U of M is in session. Dress is extremely casual. |

Blimpy Burger is the best burger I've ever had. Blimpy's is a small greasy hole in the wall with nice picnic tables outside. The staff are sometimes rude and the overall atmosphere is pretty intimidating. But none of that matters since it's the best burger you will ever have. |

A local legend with lots of history, but my stomach could never take the grease. Still, others somehow do endure, and the burgers are tasty and served with many combinations of condiments. |
