We recently moved to Northwest Indiana a few months ago and have been looking for a decent restauraunt. Texas Corral is the best that we have found. We will be dining at Texas Corral on a regular basis. The Salad was cold, with fresh lettuce, the blue cheese was very good. Rolls were nicely sweetened. The Steaks were the best. |

I visited the Portage, IN Texas Corral on July 20, 2004. First, it appeared that the air conditioning was not working very well that evening. I was very disappointed with the food. We (my husband, daughter, and I) went there to celebrate my daughter's 17th birthday. She chose this restaurant for her birthday meal. The special that night was steak tacos, so I ordered them. There was very little meat in them, the lettuce was wilted, they were cold, and our server told us there would be no tomatoes on anything, because they were out. How does a restaurant like Texas Corral run out of tomatoes on a Tuesday night?? My daughter ordered chicken fajitas, which were okay. My husband ordered prime rib (medium rare), and it was mostly fat, very little meat, more medium well than medium rare, and we questioned the weight of it. The service was very, very good. The fajitas were hot, the rest of the entrees were cold, especially the "steak" tacos, which, by the way, cost $11.95 (for no meat!)I was not impressed with the kitchen management. This corporation should have hired my husband when they had the chance - he could manage a restaurant kitchen much more effectively than it is currently being managed. Before you say this review is "sour grapes", let me clarify that my husband interviewed with this company in July 2003, and we have been visiting the Portage Texas Corral on a regular basis before and after his interview, and we will visit the restaurant again in the future because we have always liked eating there. I hope our bad experience was just a "bad night" for the kitchen, and not a continuing trend. However, if they are looking for a kitchen manager, (I am serious), my husband, with over 20 years in the restaurant business, would be excellent at it! |

The Texas Corral offers great and filling lunch specials Mon-Sat for $4.95. From burgers to pasta and salads, I have never been displeased.
There are also daily drink specials. Mondays certain draft beers are only 50 cents; Fridays "texas-sized" drinks are a dollar off and worth it!
You enter this place and get all the shelled peanuts you can it. Go ahead, throw the shells on the floor, too. Servers even encourage you to.
Sweet warm bread comes with all meals, too. Sodas re refillable as well.
And for the non-smokers here, this place is big enough to keep the stinking smokers away and you can enjoy your meal stink-free.
There are several other locally-owned Texas Corrals in Northwest Indiana, but this one is my favorite. The manager is always busy during normal hours to talk to guests. Servers are very attentive. |
